When should an employee receive an employment contract?

An employer needs to give the employee a written statement of employment particulars (this is not an employment agreement), which is made up of the main document (the principal statement) and the wider written statement. The principal statement needs to be provided by the first day of employment and the wider written statement must be provided within 2 months of the start date. Alternatively, the employer made provide an employment agreement which encompasses both the principal statement and the wider written statement by the first day of employment.
